This anthem was adopted in 1867 when Canada gained independence from the British Empire. The lyrics was inspired by a large maple tree which stood on his street in front of Maple Cottage. It was unpopular amongst French Canadians because of its strongly British perspective, preventing it from becoming an official state anthem. It was replaced in 1980.
